Travelling to Lake Toba

during Christmas and new year holiday session, I got approval from my boss for 2 weeks leave. during my leave I go back to my Kampung (hometown) near Lake Toba. During this time, I spent sometime to visit Lake Toba/Samosir Island ( As mention on Wikipedia, Lake Toba (Indonesian: Danau Toba) is a large natural lake occupying the caldera of a supervolcano. The lake is about 100 kilometres (62 miles) long, 30 kilometres (19 mi) wide, and up to 505 metres (1,657 ft) deep. Located in the middle of the northern part of the Indonesian island of Sumatra, with a surface elevation of about 900 metres (2,953 ft), the lake stretches from 2.88°N 98.52°E to 2.35°N 99.1°E. It is the largest lake in Indonesia and also the largest volcanic lake in the world.

Beside wikipedia, we can browse more info on Samosir Tourism page (

I love all the surrounding, just like what the local government said on their slogan, Samosir is like “Negeri Indah Kepingan Surga”. in english said, “Beautiful land as piece of heaven”, hopefully my english version is correct.

You can go to the lake through 2 International Airport, one near Medan, Kuala Namo International Airport (, the other one at North Tapanuli, Silangit International Airpot (

The nearest airport will be Silangit International Airport, because within 30 minutes you can arrive at Lake Toba. By using Ferry, you can cross to Samosir Island. There are a lot of spots that can hypnotize your eyes because of the God Creatures on this island.

Beside that, there is annual festival around Lake Toba, call it “Pesta Danau Toba”. We can see a lot of thing, such as traditional performance coming from local culture. Prove it and be a eyewitness for all those unbelievable culture.

go check your calendar and setup your plan to visit Lake Toba immediately.

There are some family graveyard that local people always build with some beautiful design and with specific history.
